Elizabeth -- he may very well BE a writer. I know plenty of writers in SF with such hobbies. (Although just from personal experience, my guess is "engineer.")

You know, as I think about it, it makes sense. At least the costume. If that helmet has proper insulation, it might save the guy's hearing.
